(3108) Panshin, Alekseï (1940-). “Obriad Perekhoda” (“Rite of passage”).

419 pages. Beautiful morocco chestnut binding, title in gilt. Gilt illustration to the spine and original science fiction drawing on the jacket. Samizdat dated 1980.

The first known edition in Russian doesn’t appear until 1999 (489 pages. OCLC 55470054). the works of Panshin, like nearly all those of the Anglo-American authors were strictly forbidden from being published or circulated in the USSR. Our samizdat is one of the first productions of the “Klub Altruist” which, well before the Perestroika, ran a very real risk of official reprisals, not only by making such works known by clandestine means but also clearly indicating themselves as the publishers. “Altruist” would continue their activities after the end of the USSR.
This copy is one of the 50 copies published by “Altruist” from a typewritten copy of the translation. The jacket of the original English-language edition is reproduced on the title page and the name “Altruist” appears to the verso for the first time.
